As a follow up to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , part 2 of my build process. Spent the rest of the night researching parts. I think I have a parts list already. For some reason, figuring out the parts this time around has been a lot easier. My budget for the PC itself was $2000 in Canada dollars, and I’ve just managed to stay under that.
CPU - Intel i5 6600K “Skylake” quad-core 3.2 GhZ (OC to 4.6)
CPU Cooler - Corsair H105
Mobo - GIGABYTE G1 Gaming GA-Z170X Micro-ATX
RAM - 2x8 GB Corsair Vengence DDR4
PSU - Corsair RM650X 80+Gold 650W
SSD - Samsung EVO 500GB
HDD - Hitachi Deathstar 2TB 7200 RPM
GPU - GeForce GTX 970 4GB DDR5 VRAM
Case - Corsair Obsidian 350D Micro-ATX
Monitor - ASUS VG248QE 24”
Keyboard - Logitech K800 wireless chicklet
Gamepad - Microsoft XBox 360 USB wired
Speakers - Creative GigaWorks T40 II, 2.0
Still have yet to nail down the exact RAM model I need, haven’t yet checked the QVL. Will probably give Corsair a call (their tech support is great).
This will be the first non-ASUS board I’ve owned in, like, 20 years, but I’ve read that the new Z170 chipset boards are having issues: that ASUS is pumping out firmware updates every five minutes. Lots of issues with RAM overclocking. Chose the G1 in part because of its higher-quality audio codecs. I don’t want my new board to have your bog-standard Realtec codecs.
Eyeing the Corsair Obsidian 350D because it seems to fit my enclosure well, and I know that the H105’s radiator will fit perfectly.
For sound wanted the best 2.0 audio solution I could find. My place is small so won’t need much power, plus I don’t have room for a powered sub.
Tempted to get 2x16 GB RAM but meh, 16 is fine for now and can always update (the board can take up to 64!).
Also don’t know exactly how much wattage the system will draw - haven’t added it all up - so I’m largely guessing by choosing a 650W. I’ll want to know my draw plus add another 25% for future-proofing.
Lastly, the one part of this build I’m 100% sold on is going with the new Z170 chipset. Seems to be the way to go if you’re upgrading from a (cough) Core 2 Quad Q9550 “Yorkfield”.
Oppocomp opinions, questions and suggestions welcome!
She will also need a name: all good computers deserve a name, just like cars. Suggestions?

Seems like a good choice of parts. Nothing I’d change.

The only question I have is why on earth the Hitachi for the HDD? Seeing you used the colloquial name for it, you’ve witnessed its heroics before.
What’s the advantage of having both the SSD and HDD? Put the programs on the SSD and use the HDD for storage?

Hehe, yes, the Deathstar was blown up long ago. In its place is a much improved drive. I’ve used all sorts of HDDs and I’ve found that the Deskstars are really bulletproof.
And exactly yes: SSD for the OS (Win 10) plus programs, HDD for storage.

You should get the Windforce GTX970. It’s a nice cooler. Also, you need one of these for sure -

That setup looks so cool.

It does, which is why I used it as my header :)
The PC-in-a-desk mod is stupidly high-end but has become slightly more common over the last couple years.

Thanks, was needing a recommendation for which manufacturer. Most people will go for whatever has the rebates or the free games but not me, more interested in their 3rd party sink/cooler configs.
And as for the racing wheel, heh. May add that in later. Despite my love of cars not a huge racing game fan. Am also picking up an Xbone so, for now, will probably play N4S or Forza there, with a controller.

I thought it was yours.

Uh, no. I wish I had $10,000+ and/or hundreds of man-hours to assemble something like that.

My Gigabyte 970-G1 has served me well, so I’ll vouch for it too. I’d like to get a 980 or 980 Ti at some point, though.

Wait till the spring, nVIDIA has a new chipset coming out, called Pascal, and its apparently going to dropkick the Titan X in the face.

I’ll be on the lookout for that, then. Thanks!

Is the PC in the table? That’s awesome.

Yes, a stupidly awesome trend in ultra high end builds ($10-15k).
